Pantry Jems

Rob and I do our best to keep a few kitchen basics in the house. Dried fruit are one such staple. Really, there is no way to go wrong with these little gems hiding in your pantry. Dried cranberries are as fresh as ever right now, so it's a great time to head to your local co-op or farmer's market to pick some up. They perk up any dish or dessert with a tart spark and a splash of garnet color. Rasins are perfect for sweetening up any dish and go great with some celery and peanut butter. Currants are a basic for a variety of Middle Eastern and other ethnic and exotic dishes. Or simply just toss them together for a quick and easy snack on the go. A little bit of the basics go a long way.

Hi dear,
ReplyDeleteJust wanted to drop you a line and say hey. I love your food blog and I've actually filed away a few of the recipes to try once I've got a little more time (and once I've got a better handle on the major appliances in my kitchen--you know me, I usually stick to my microwave or toaster oven, and if all else fails, I go get take-out!).
xx Daphne
Apricots, currants and blueberries are my favorite dried fruits - you're right, they have a myriad of delicious uses! I'm hoping to use my apricots to make some chocolate apricot rugelach over the thanksgiving break. :)

I totally forgot to throw in a shout out to M who gave me the wonderful little wooden serving dish that you see poorly photographed there (there was no good light today).
ReplyDeleteI like dried fruits: raisins, prunes , apples, apricots, bananas, cranberries, figs, mangoes, pawpaw, peaches, pears, persimmons, pineapples.
ReplyDeleteThey are a good alternative to be available to' out of season' fresh fruits. It is a healthy snack (my children used to eat them instead of candies) and excellent ingredient to pies and meat sauces.
I agree! Actually, just finished off a bag of dried raisins & cranberries last night (while watching "House" on TiVo). Will have to buy more ASAP to prep for Turkey Day...
